A Message from COMPACT's Executive Director,  George Fuller

Seventeen Years! Orlando/Orange County COMPACT successfully completed another year – another year of service to our youth and to our community. COMPACT started as a pilot program of 14 students at Jones High School in 1989, and has touched the lives of more than 500 students for 2005 – 2006. Since its inception, almost 9,000 young people have benefited from the program – many of whom are successful, achieving adults today.

among this year’s students. Co-Student of the Year, Hoang Ho, Oak Ridge High School, achieved unweighted and weighted GPA’s of 4.0 and 4.66 respectively, the highest in both categories. She will attend the University of Florida. The other Co-Student of the Year, Tiffany-Anne Tomlinson, Dr. Phillips High School, will attend the arch-rival college, Florida State University. Tiffany-Anne improved her GPA from a 2.3 her freshman year to 3.7, 3.9 and 3.5 for the last three years. Active in many school and volunteer organizations, she was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s High School Seniors. Angel Cifuentes, a student at Jones High School, received COMPACT’s Lee Norris Rayam Scholarship. An outstanding student, Angel achieved a 4.2 weighted GPA for his senior year. Like Hoang, he’s going to be a Gator. Honored as the Most Improved Student is Sayad Lutfi, Colonial 9th Grade Center. He improved his GPA from .9 to 3.3, an increase of 2.4! Sayad, Angel and Tiffany-Anne were among the 22 winners of the annual Washington D. C. Trip which is featured in this Annual Report. Hoang, a sure winner, was unable to participate due to a prior commitment

We say congratulations to these four outstanding students and to all the students who made this another successful year for COMPACT. To those who helped nurture and guide our students – parents, mentors, teachers and business partners – we offer a special thanks!

'There are no

guarantees for

student success,

but we - educators,

mentors, and

parents - must all be

there for the

long haul for our

students. The flip

side is, if we don’t

care, they are

guaranteed to fail."

COMPACT GOES TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

Twenty-two special achievers, winners of a year-long competition, journeyed to our nation’s capital, May 30 to June 4 to learn, explore, and make new friends. These trips have been conducted annually since 1992, except for 2002 and 2003, when national security concerns necessitated substituting Florida trips to Tallahassee and St. Augustine. The twenty-two winners were: Colonial High School: Kenneth McClain; Colonial 9th Grade Center: Robert Baez, David Garcia, Sayad Lutfi; Dr. Phillips: Daphne Casimir, Sherbyne Delice, Stevy Elie, Ruth Joseph, Vickie Mertis, Tiffany-Anne Tomlinson; Evans High School: Elliot Dix; Jones High School: Angel Cifuentes, Myha Copeland,Calvin Hayes; Oak Ridge High School: Romelyne Augustin, Darlida Chatelain, Frank Laguerre, Rudie Semelfort, Ashley Williams; Timber Creek High School: Jared Adams, Jennifer Beasley, Niels Linders. Accompanying the students were Executive Director, George Fuller and the following COMPACT and OCPS Staff and Faculty: Rose Cooper, Colonial; Carol Everett and Addie Grier, Dr. Phillips; Julie Helton, Senior Administrator, South Learning Community; Dawn Plagianes, Oak Ridge; Donald Tillman, Silver Start Center; and Rocky Robinson, COMPACT Program Manager.

The trip included a tour of the United States Capitol arranged by Florida’s Congressional District 7 Representative John L. Mica; visits to all of the memorials and the Smithsonian Museums; a boat cruise to the estate of George Washington at Mount Vernon; and much more!

Highlighting the trip was a dialogue with Vice Admiral David L. Brewer III who recently retired from service on April 1, 2006. Admiral Brewer is a native of Orlando and a graduate of Jones High School. He had a distinguished military career and at one time was the highest ranking African American in the Navy. At the time of his retirement, Admiral Brewer commanded the Military Sealift Command which operates more than 100 ships and employs over 8,000 people worldwide. Admiral Brewer emphasized the importance of reading, setting goals, and making concrete plans for the future. He regaled the students with Brain Teasers regarding math and history and awarded prizes of $20.00 to the three outstanding participants.

The students experienced a trip they will never forget!
