    A Message

from COMPACT's Executive Director,

George Fuller

COMPACT has successfully completed another year of service, our 15th, to our youth and to our community! Orlando/Orange County COMPACT, the brainchild of former Orlando Mayor, Bill Frederick, began in the spring of 1989 with a pilot program at Jones High School. Fifteen students and 15 mentors comprised that initiative.

Now, 15 years later, COMPACT is still marching forward! Since that 1989 pilot program, we have touched the lives of almost 8,000 students, including almost 700 for this school year. More than 4,000 mentors and dozens of others: teachers, counselors, parents and business partners have helped us help our youngsters. To all of them we simply, yet profoundly, say thanks!

This Annual Report will give you a glimpse of what transpired during this 2003 - 2004 school year. You will learn a bit about this year's heroes: students, mentors, teachers and staff. Yes, we are proud that COMPACT is still serving, is still inspiring, and is still guiding youth to responsible adulthood.

The very first COMPACT Specialist, Annette Wise, now an OCPS resource teacher, is seen here with Executive Director George Fuller. Mrs. Wise served as the COMPACT Specialist/Coordinator for the pilot program launched at Jones High School in March 1989. Mr. Fuller, then a District Manager with AT&T, was one of the original 15 mentors in the pilot program.

Rufus Brooks, retired OCPS Principal and one of the early COMPACT mentors at Jones High School, is pictured with his current mentee, Jones student, Wendall Joseph.

COMPACT's annual Washington D.C. Cultural/Educational Trip, which began in 1992, was interrupted in 2002 and 2003 due to the events surrounding September 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq. It was replaced in those years by a Florida Trip to Tallahassee and St. Augustine. Returning to our nation's capital for the first time since 2001, this proved to be one of the best trips ever!

Participants in this exciting adventure held from May 31- June 6 were the following 14 special achieving COMPACT students (winners of a year long competition emphasizing good grades, attendance, behavior, writing skills as well as community service) - Colonial High School: Steve Marchetti, Maria Morales, Raul (RJ) Ortiz; Colonial 9th Grade Center: Marline Maestre, Shawn Rose; Dr. Phillips: David Hunt, Cinthia Mendoza, Danielle Peterson, LaSable Williams; Edgewater: Luz Torres; Evans: Brandon Siler, Alicia Williams; Gateway: Chastin Nash; University: Franchesca Ortiz; and the following COMPACT and OCPS staff: Liana Baker, Jones; Rose Cooper, Colonial; Carol Everett, Dr. Phillips; George Fuller,

Executive Director; Veronica McKay, OCPS Resource Teacher; James Newton, Board member and photographer; Dawn Plagianes, Memorial; Hardy Rayam, Silver Star Center; Juanita Reed, Dr. Phillips; Rocky Robinson, Program Manager; and Tenille Rodgers, Gateway.

The highlight of the trip was the two hours spent with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (who has met with the COMPACT group on every trip). He extolled the virtues of reading, perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. Our students especially enjoyed hearing him talk about overcoming obstacles and working hard to achieve your dreams. Our group also met with Congressman Ric Keller, former Chair of the COMPACT Board of Directors, who talked of his time as a student at Boone High School. He, too, emphasized reading and related how it helped him achieve his success.

Further defining the significance of Washington D.C. was the passing of former President Ronald Reagan who died on the next to last day of the trip. Our visit to the National Cathedral where President Reagan's memorial service was held, along with our visit with Justice Thomas who was mentored by former Senator Danforth (who delivered one of the eulogies at the service), gave our students the chance to really be a part of history. One of the students spoke for everyone when she said, "This trip has been wonderful! I will remember it for the rest of my life."
