Eighteen Years and Counting! A Message from COMPACT's Executive Director, George Fuller
Yes, COMPACT is still serving our community and is still helping to mold
young lives! Orlando/Orange County COMPACT, launched in 1989 with
a pilot program of 15 students at Jones High School, guided and nurtured
over 600 students for this year. Since inception almost 10,000 young
people have been a part of our program - many are fulfilling our vision and
have become responsible, contributing members of society.
The three students pictured on the cover are only a sample of our
outstanding performers for 2006 - 2007. Co-recipient of the Lee Norris
Rayam Scholarship, Yasmine George, Jones High School, is headed to UCF.
Ruth Joseph, Dr Phillip High School, Co-recipient, Lee Norris Rayam Scholarship and Co-student of the year will attend the University of South
Florida. This is the first time a student has won both of these awards, The
other Co-Student of the Year, Pamela Pockets, just completed her freshman
year as an honor student at Colonial 9th Grade Center
In addition to our special achieving high school students, elementary and
middle school students performed very well. Elementary School Student of
the Year, Nancy Truong, a 5th grader at Englewood Elementary, achieved a
3.8 GPA and was selected to receive a Disney Dreamers and DOers award.
Tene Polite, Middle School Student of year, just completed 8th grade
at Memorial Middle. Achieving a GPA of 3.6, she increased her GPA by
almost two points
We are proud of and thankful for all who helped make this a successful,
exciting year. To all of you - students, teachers, mentors, parents, board
members and business partners - we say thank you!

Overview of the COMPACT Scholarship Program The COMPACT scholarships were first awarded in 1991, funded by private donations, Since then over 200 scholarships have been funded by private donors and the City of Orlando grant. The Lee Norris Rayam Scholarship is named in the honor of Lee Norris Rayam, a community and COMPACT volunteer and a staunch advocate for the youth. Tragically, he was murdered in Jamaica in 1994, The scholarship was increased this year from $1,000 to $1,500 due to a donation from COMPACT mentor, Bob Goldman, It is renewable at one half value (now $750.00) for three years if the student makes satisfactory progress. |
