Annual Cultural/Educational Trip

Since 1992, each year COMPACT students compete in a rigorous yearlong contest that emphasizes good grades, attendance and behavior; verbal and written communication skills; and community service. Approximately 15 winners receive a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. The students learn how our government works, visit historical sites and museums, meet with high-ranking officials and have a grand time. In 2002 and 2003, due to the events surrounding September 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq, this was replaced by a Tallahassee/St. Augustine trip.

Participants in the 2006 excursion to our nation's capital included 22 special achievers representing seven high schools. The highlight of the trip was a dialogue with Vice Admiral David L. Brewer III who recently retired from service on April 1, 2006. Admiral Brewer is a native of Orlando and a graduate of Jones High School. He had a distinguished military career and at one time was the highest ranking African American in the Navy. Other significant visits included a tour of the United States Capitol, visits to all of the memorials, and the Smithsonian Museums.
